Biography

Rachel Evangeline Barham  (Guest Soprano)

Rachel received her Master of Music from The Catholic University of America and
performs frequently in the Washington, DC, area. Roles include Cleopatra in Handel's
Giulio Cesare and Poppea in Monteverdi’s L’Incoronazione di Poppea (Catholic University),
Olga in Lehár's The Merry Widow with the Washington Savoyards, First Spirit in Mozart's
Die Zauberflöte with Summer Opera Theatre Company, and Attendant in Purcell's Dido
and Aeneas with Opera Alterna. Oratorio work includes Jephthah’s Daughter in Carissimi’s
Jephte and soprano solos in the Mozart/Handel Der Messias and Reinhard Keiser's St. Mark Passion with Cantate
Chamber Singers, Gabriel in Haydn's Creation at American University, and soprano solos in Steve Reich's Tehillim and
Armando Bayolo's Towards Golgotha with the Great Noise Ensemble. Last year she performed Buxtehude tributes at the
American Guild of Organists' national convention in Baltimore and on the Westminster Presbyterian Organ Concert Series
in Charlottesville, Virginia, and sang with Opera Lafayette at Strathmore and in New York. Ms. Barham premiered Maurice
Saylor's award-winning song set Laudis Corona (composed for her) and Andrew Simpson's song cycle Seeds of
Vengeance and created the roles of Isychia in Simpson's The Furies and Gloria and The Guardian's Sister in Saylor's
operatic film score Teddy at the Throttle with the Snark Ensemble. A solo recital on the Church of the Epiphany's Tuesday
Concert Series is planned for July.
