Biography
Jason Rylander (Tenor)
Increasingly in demand as a soloist on the baroque scene, Jason Rylander has been hailed by the Washington
Post for his "strong, clear tenor." His performance of Bach's B-Minor Mass in a debut with the Washington
Bach Consort this season received accolades: "Whether in solos or duos" tenor Jason Rylander "lent depth
and continuity to the whole." Rylander's solos "coupled sonorous warmth and emotional depth." (Washington
Post). A review of a recent performance of the Monteverdi Vespers 1610 with the Countertop Ensemble and
the Orchestra of the 17th Century, noted that "Countertop had some exceptional voices, especially its tenors
Matthew Smith and Jason Rylander. Both had clear, ardent voices that soared above a lot of brass noise." (All
Arts Review).
Jason has also performed as a concert soloist with the New Dominion Chorale, Washington Summer Sings,
National Men’s Chorus, Virginia Glee Club, Friday Morning Music Club and numerous area chorales in such
works as the Bach Magnificat, Britten's Rejoice in the Lamb, Handel's Messiah, Haydn’s Creation and St.
Cecilia Mass. An accomplished ensemble singer, Jason performs regularly with the Washington Bach
Consort, Opera Lafayette, the Bach Sinfonia, and the Pro Core of the Cathedral Choral Society. He has also
appeared with the Woodley Ensemble. With the Bach Sinfonia, he has recorded the Bach Motets (Dorian
2011) and works of Carissimi (Jeptha), Biber, and Rossi (Dorian 2009). In June 2010, he will attend the
Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Institute.
On the opera stage, Jason Rylander has performed with The In Series, Opera Belcantanti, Summer Opera
Theatre Company, the Washington Savoyards, Crittenden Opera Studio, and The Arlington Players. Recent
roles include: Kaspar in Amahl and the Night Visitors, 1st Armed Man/2nd Priest in The Magic Flute, Don
Fernando de Gomez in La Perichole, and Ralph Rackstraw in H.M.S. Pinafore.
